POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Four members of the Vassar baseball team picked up All-Liberty League recognition today, as announced by the league office. Sophomore Ezra Caspi earned a first-team selection as a designated hitter, while senior pitcher Patrick Fitzgerald and sophomore utility Alex Warren snagged second-team honors. Also receiving an honorable mention nod is senior pitcher Matt McGannon.
Caspi had a strong season for the Brewers, starting all 20 games this season and leading the team with a .418 batting average, ranking third in the Liberty League. Caspi also led the team in hits (28), runs (22), and slugging percentage (.642). He added three home runs, four doubles, one triple, and six stolen bases. The designated hitter recorded nine multi-hit games with a season-best four hits against Ithaca. Caspi opened the season on a seven-game hitting streak and then tallied a nine-game hitting run.
Fitzgerald has been the top pitcher for the Brewers this season going 3-2 for a team-high 34.2 innings pitched, which was also 10th most in the conference. He had a team-lowest 4.15 ERA and was fifth in the Liberty League with 41 strikeouts. Fitzgerald had the fourth-best opposing batting average in the conference at .225. In his first start, Fitzgerald posted a 1.80 ERA in 5.0 innings against Bard, allowing only one run in the win.
In his sophomore season, Warren broke out third on the team in hits with 21 and second with a .375 batting average. He totaled 14 runs, 11 RBI, five doubles, two triples, and his first-career home run. He led the team with eight stolen bases. Warren hit a season-best four hits in the win over Bard on April 23 and recorded seven multi-hit games.
McGannon recorded the fourth-lowest team ERA at 4.30 and pitched 14.2 innings. He struck out 13 batters. In his start against Union on May 2, McGannon went 7.0 innings and posted a 1.29 ERA and struck out six batters while only giving up one run.
Vassar finished the season at 7-13.
