Brewers Battle Bombers To Draw On Senior Day

Brewers honor five seniors prior to kick-off

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team opened Liberty League play Saturday afternoon with a 0-0 draw against visiting Ithaca on Senior Day. Prior to kick-off the Brewers honored Jacob Raphan (Oceanside, NY), Koray Tekin (Winter Park, FL), Mauricio Mejia (Miami, FL), Eli Torrey (Philadelphia, PA) and Jackson Allen (Chapel Hill, NC) for their contributions to the program over the course of their careers.
 
Saturday's draw moves Vassar to 2-4-2 overall on the season and 0-0-1 in conference play with the Bombers remaining unbeaten at 7-0-3 overall and 0-0-1 in Liberty League play.
 
How It Happened
  • A spirited affair throughout, both teams had chances early on Saturday to break through.
  • Raphan was forced to make two saves in the early going, while Joshua Lee (Bethlehem, PA)  and Tekin forced stops by Ithaca keeper Brayden Milbrandt inside the first 25 minutes of play.
  • Vassar finished the first half doubling up Ithaca in shots 10-5.
  • Milbrandt was forced to make five stops to keep Vassar off the board, while Raphan made a trio of stops to keep Ithaca off the board in the first half.
  • First half corner kicks on Saturday also went to the Brewers by a 6-3 margin.
  • Saturday's second half featured 11 shots with Ithaca holding a slim 6-5 advantage in attempts.
  • Vassar's best chance in the second half came from back-to-back shots from Arata Yamazaki (West Harrison, NY) and Daniel Matthews (Landenberg, PA) in the 74th minute.
  • The Yamazaki attempt was denied by the Ithaca backline before Milbrandt turned aside the rebound to keep the game scoreless.
  • Ithaca's most dangerous chance after halftime came on a blast from Edin Estrada that Raphan snared just inside the left post in the 86th minute.
  • Milbrandt made two more stops after halftime with Raphan making the one stop after the break.
  • Vassar took the only corner kick after the intermission.
 
For The Brewers
  • Raphan posted his second clean sheet of the season on Saturday after making four saves against the Bombers.
  • Lee led Vassar with five shots in the game, putting two attempts on target.
  • Mejia and Yamazaki each finished the day with two shots in the contest.
 
For The Bombers
  • Milbrandt held Vassar off the board with seven saves on Saturday.
  • Joshua Bourdoulous paced the Bombers with three shots in the game.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar held a 15-11 advantage in overall shots and doubled up the Bombers in shots on goal, 8-4.
  • Corner kicks went to the Brewers, 7-3.
