Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Tennis team saw two players qualify for the upcoming ITA Cup to be held in Rome, Georgia on October 12-16. By virtue of a runner-up performance in singles play at the ITA Northeast Regional,
Erin McCusker (Norton, MA), has qualified in singles play and will join
Sofie Shen (New York, NY) in the doubles competition after the duo competed in the final of the regional.
McCusker will become the fourth singles player and join Shen as the third doubles pair in program history to represent Vassar at the ITA Cup.
ITA Northeast Regional Singles Recap
- McCusker made the journey through the singles bracket with a 5-1 record, with the lone loss coming in the final.
- McCusker won two matches on each of the first two days of the three-day event before posting a 6-1, 6-4 semifinal victory over Josephine Libby from Rochester, the top seed in the singles draw.
- McCusker ultimately was edged in the final by Jimena Mendez from NYU.
ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Recap
- McCusker and Shen were the second seed in the doubles draw and finished the regional tournament with a 4-1 record.
- The top doubles pair for the Brewers earned an 8-4 quarterfinal victory over Skidmore and outlasted their opponents from TCNJ 8-7 (6) in the semifinal round.
- Taking on Dakota Fordham and Isabella Hartmann from NYU in the final, McCusker and Shen were edged in an incredibly hard fought 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (2-7), 10-8 decision.
