POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -Â Sophomore Aidan Mayer highlighted day one of the Liberty League Championships by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a program and meet record. Junior Miles Takiguchi also took the 10k title with a meet record time. The Brewers currently are fifth out of eight teams, while Ithaca leads with 73 points.
The decathlon started the meet, and first-year Max Bergman ranks fifth with 2,747 points. Bergman ran a 12.13 in the 100-meter for sixth and then took second in the long jump with 6.34 meters. He recorded 1.68 meters in the high jump and was fourth in the 400-meter at 54.81.
In the 400-meter, junior Tucker Quinlan placed 11th after running a 53.33. Sophomore Darnell Worley qualified for the 100-meter finals by placing sixth with a time of 11.30. Sophomores Tim Jacques and Simon LaClair went 10th and 11th, respectively. Jacques crossed at 1:57.23, while LaClair ran a 1:57.56.
Junior Lukas Muzila ran a personal best 58.50 in the 400-hurdles for fourth overall and qualifies for tomorrow's finals.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Aidan Mayer became the Liberty League champion after running a meet and program record of 9:20.87. Mayer kicked down the lead runner from St. Lawrence in the final 50-meters to secure the title for the Brewers. Sophomore Andrew Blackburn placed eighth overall at 9:51.05.
In the 10,000-meter race, Takiguchi won the gold medal with a time of 30:13.51. Takiguchi was neck-and-neck with RPI's John Reed but broke away after 7,200 meters to secure the title by 26 seconds.
On the field, sophomore Michael Came took sixth in the javelin with 48.52 meters.
Day two of the Liberty League Championships begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at Weinberg Track.
