Swimming & Diving Outstanding on Day 3 of League Championships

Ecklund wins 100-back; 23 others compete in event finals as both squads sit in fourth overall

ITHACA, NY – It was another outstanding day in the pool for the Vassar men's and women's swimming & diving teams as they continued action at the 2022 Liberty League Championships at Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium at Ithaca College on Friday. The Brewers men remain fourth of eight teams, while the Vassar women continue to sit fourth of 10 participating teams. In total on the day, 24 individuals qualified for the event finals on Friday night.

Opening the evening action was the 200-butterfly and the men's side saw senior Max White place eighth overall in a time of 1:56.93 in the Championship Final. Junior Jason Albaum was 12th overall in 1:57.74 in the Consolation Final, while rookie Tyler Tsukuda finished 17th overall in 2:04.59 in the Bonus Final.

The women's event was a loaded one for the Brewers as they claimed quality points across the board. Junior Lillian Lowenthal led the charge, earning Silver Medal and All-League Second Team honors, after touching the wall in 2:06.47 for second. Classmate Grace Myers garnered the Bronze Medal and All-League Third Team, finishing third in 2:10.13, while sophomore Alejandra Robins was fourth in 2:10.83 in the Championship Final.

Sophomore Karlie Porter and rookie Maya Luongo swam to 10th (2:17.47) and 11th (2:18.51), respectively in the Consolation Final of the 200-fly, while sophomore Abby Wang posted 22nd (2:26.22) in the Bonus Final.

Next up was the 100-backstroke and in the men's event, junior Nick D'Arrigo swam to eighth in the Championship Final with a time of 53.65. Junior Leroy Wang was 21st in the Bonus Final in 59.42.

On the women's side, it was a victorious run as senior Jesse Ecklund won in an NCAA B Cut and school record time of 56.28. A Gold Medal and All-League First Team performance, it bested her own school record mark of 56.64 – set back in 2019 – and also marked her second B cut of this year's meet. Sophomore Sarah Quintana also had an outstanding swim, taking fourth overall in 57.66. Classmate Jolie Walker rounded out the Championship Final effort, earning eighth overall in 59.25. Rookie Jordan Marlow took 24th in the event in 1:03.48 in the Bonus Final.

The 100-breaststroke saw a number of Bonus Final swims for the Brewers, paced by sophomore Rory Stumpf in 18th with a time of 1:00.99. Senior Nikolas Pham was 19th in 1:01.32, while rookie Hayden Ehrenfeld was 20th in 1:01.71. Senior Brandon Li was 22nd in 1:02.46, while sophomore Hanlin Wang was 23rd in 1:02.62.

On the women's side, senior Abby Jenkins was 17th overall in the Bonus Final with a time of 1:11.71, while sophomore Szofia Lewis was 18th in 1:12.46.

In the men's 1-meter diving event, senior Sam Fujikawa shined once again. Qualifying for the event finals, he took seventh overall with a score of 348.35 points.

Swimming action closed out in the 800-freestyle relay. Vassar's men's A relay of junior Robbie Perot, rookie Ben Glazebnik, Albaum and White powered their way to fourth overall in 7:00.62. The B relay, comprised of Hanlin Wang, Tsukuda, Stumpf and sophomore Lukas Johnson, was 21st in a time of 7:29.40.

The women's event saw the foursome of Myers, Lowenthal, junior Abby Whittington and Ecklund combine for third overall in a time of 7:47.34. The B relay of sophomore Alanna Muello, Robins, Luongo and Quintana finished 17th overall in 7:58.57.

Through 29 events, RIT continues to lead the men's standings with a score of 1288. Ithaca is second with 1166, while Rensselaer is third with 979. Vassar sits fourth with 655, while Skidmore rounds out the top-five with 477.

In the women's standings, the host Bombers continue to lead the way with a score of 1088. RIT is second with 951, while Rensselaer sits third with 860. Vassar has a score of 794 for fourth, while St. Lawrence rounds out the top-five with a score of 480.

The final day of action at this year's championship gets underway at 10am on Saturday with the morning preliminaries. Action will conclude in the event finals, beginning at 6pm.
