POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – It was a record-setting day and a Senior celebration for the Vassar College men's and women's swimming & diving teams, who hosted the Vassar Sprint Invitational at Kresge Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers welcomed Skidmore and Bard to the pool, recording the top score amongst the three teams. Vassar celebrated its Class of 2022 in a pre-meet ceremony, honoring Jesse Ecklund, Abby Jenkins,
Sam Fujikawa,
Brandon Li,
Jake Mier,
Nikolas Pham and
Max White for their outstanding careers.
Vassar combined for a score of 1239 on the day, ahead of Skidmore (995) and Bard (204). The Brewers men posted a total score of 597, followed by Skidmore (567) and Bard (95), while the women's side saw Vassar with 642 points, followed by Skidmore (428) and Bard (109).
Meet action got underway with the 200-yard medley relay as the Vassar women went 1-2. The foursome of sophomores Sarah Quintana and Alejandra Robins, along with juniors Lillian Lowenthal and Abby Whittington combined for a winning time of 1:53.08. Runner-up went to sophomore Jolie Walker, senior Abby Jenkins, rookie Maya Luongo and junior Sophie Forbes as they combined for a time of 1:55.78.
On the men's side, it was a record-setting affair as junior
Nick D'Arrigo, seniors
Nikolas Pham and
Max White, along with rookie
Ben Glazebnik posted a time of 1:38.48. That time eclipsed the spring invite record – originally 1:41.16 set back in 2016. The Brewers also earned second in the event as senior
Brandon Li, sophomore
Hanlin Wang, junior
Jason Albaum and sophomore
Lukas Johnson combined for a mark of 1:43.50.
Next up in the women's 500-yard freestyle, junior Grace Myers won the women's event with a time of 5:27.63, while the men's even was won in solid fashion by junior
Robbie Perot in 4:46.12. That mark was just a fraction off the meet record of 4:46.00 set back in 2018.
In the 100-yard backstroke, senior Jesse Ecklund powered her way to first in a meet record time of 59.37. That mark bested the 2018 meet record of 1:01.23. The men's side saw junior
Leroy Wang finish third overall in 1:01.53.
The 50-yard breaststroke was captured by Jenkins as she finished in 34.63, while Pham captured the win on the men's side in 28.33. Next up in the 100-yard butterfly, it was a 1-2-3 finish for the women, paced by Robins with the win in 1:01.46. Myers took second (1:02.89), while sophomore Alanna Muello was third overall (1:04.18). The men's side was won by Glazebnik, who touched the wall in 53.82 for victory.
In the 50-yard freestyle, the women dominated in a 1-2-3-4-5-6 finish. Leading the way was Ecklund with a winning time of 25.47. Lowenthal was runner-up (25.82), followed by Whittington in third (25.91), Forbes in fourth (26.02), rookie Jordan Marlow in fifth (26.17) and sophomore Abby Wang in sixth (27.49).
The men's event was also a 1-2-3 finish, paced by sophomore
Hayden Ehrenfeld as he out-touched teammate Glazebnik by a fraction for the win in 22.46. Glazebnik took second in 22.60, while White was third in 23.30.
Next up saw the 400-yard Individual Medley as the women's side was won by Quintana in 4:51.21. Luongo took second overall in 4:56.22.
A switch to the diving events came next as senior
Sam Fujikawa won off the 1-meter board with 183.48 points. Rookie
Jacob Cerone was second overall with 154.55 points, while junior
Ben Bragin took fifth with 117.70 points.
Back in the pool, the 50-yard butterfly got underway with a 1-2-3 sweep on the women's side. Lowenthal was the winner in 27.19, followed by Luongo (27.81) and Whittington (28.36). The men's event saw White take the win in 24.17, while Pham was third overall (24.65).
In the 100-yard freestyle, Muello was victorious on the women's side in 56.81, while the men's side saw Glazebnik win in a meet record of 48.61. That mark bested the previous record of 49.60 which had held since 2010.
Another meet record quickly fell in the next event as Ecklund won the 50-yard backstroke in 28.40. It smashed the previous mark from 2016 of 29.10. On the men's side, Li was the winner in 26.81. Quintana then captured victory in the 200-free, posting a time of 2:02.93, while the men's side saw sophomore
Rory Stumpf take the victory in 1:52.74.
Lowenthal picked up another victory in the 100-yard individual medley, touching the wall in a time of 1:02.74. She was followed by Quintana in second (1:02.84), Luongo in third (1:04.15), Myers in fourth (1:06.42) and Marlow in fifth (1:07.69). The men's event saw D'Arrigo take second overall in 57.87.
Back to the diving events, the men headed to the 3-meter board and Fujikawa once again prevailed with a winning score of 179.05 points. Cerone took second with 140.65 points, while Bragin was fifth with 101.05 points.
In the 100-breaststroke, the women's side saw Robins victorious in 1:14.50, while on the men's side, Li was second overall in 1:02.85.
The final events of the afternoon – the 200-free relays – were a Brewers victory on both sides. The women's was paced by the foursome of Myers, Muello, Ecklund and Whittington with a meet record time of 1:42.12. That mark eclipsed the previous meet record set in 2013 of 1:43.01. The women also saw Marlow, Wang, Porter and Forbes take second in a time of 1:45.68. On the men's side, the foursome of Li, Johnson, Perot and Ehrenfeld combined for a winning time of 1:35.20.
Both squads are now idle from competition as they prepare for the 2022 Liberty League Championships at Ithaca College. Action begins on February 16 and runs through February 19.
