Men's Tennis Earns NCAA Tournament Berth, Brewers Headed to Middlebury

Vassar takes on Marywood this Friday in Middlebury, Vt.

2013 NCAA Division III Tournament Bracket

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 6, 2013) – The season will continue for the Liberty League champion Vassar College men's tennis team as the Brewers received a Pool B invitation to the NCAA Division III Tournament on Monday evening. Vassar will take on Marywood University in the first round Friday, May 10 in Middlebury, Vermont. This will be Vassar's sixth NCAA Tournament appearance overall.

Vassar (10-12) received one of seven Pool B berths reserved for schools in conferences that do not receive automatic (Pool A) bids. Skidmore, who the Brewers defeated for the Liberty League Championship last Monday, also got in the field via Pool B. The Liberty League will become a Pool A conference next spring.

The Brewers will take on Marywood (13-4), champions of the Colonial States Athletic Conference at a time to be determined Friday. The winner will face nationally ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins (19-2), the Centennial Conference champions, on Saturday. If Vassar advances to the Round of 16, that match will be Sunday at 11th-ranked Middlebury (18-4), a Pool C (at-large) selection out of the NESCAC or against either Landmark Conference champion Drew (11-6) or Skyline Conference winner Farmingdale State (12-1). The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be held May 20-22 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Vassar, which earned its first ever NCAA Tournament victory in last year's second round getting to the final 16 teams in the country against The College of New Jersey, has faced a brutal schedule in 2013, including nine teams that qualified for this year's field: Capital Athletic Conference champions Mary Washington (L 3-6, Feb. 16), USA South champions North Carolina Wesleyan (L 2-7, Feb. 16), University Athletic Association at-large selection Case Western Reserve (L 0-9, Feb. 17), Skidmore (split two meetings, won Liberty League championship match), Pool B pick MIT (L 0-9, March 1), SCIAC at-large selection Cal Lutheran (L 3-6, March 16), NESCAC at-large qualifier Amherst (L 1-8, March 30), NESCAC champion Williams (L 0-9, April 12) and Empire 8 champion Stevens (L 4-5, April 17).
