MIDDLEBURY, VT (May 10, 2013) – The Vassar College men's tennis team registered a 5-0 shutout win over Marywood University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday morning at Middlebury College's Proctor Courts. This marks the second consecutive year that Vassar has advanced to the round of 32.

The Brewers wasted little time sweeping the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead on the scoreboard. Freshman Daniel Cooper and senior tri-captain Andrew Guzick picked up an 8-2 win on Court 1 over Todd Doran and Mark Van Nort while senior Josh Kessler and freshman Christian Phelps did likewise to Daniel Pfafman and Ryan Mulqueen on Court 3. Vassar extended its lead to 3-0 as senior tri-captain Dan Freeman and freshman Evan Udine took down Marywood's Evan Bolus and Wyatt Nolan 8-3 on Court 2.

In singles action, Freeman posted a perfect 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Bolus on Court 2 to push the advantage to 4-0; Phelps soon finished the Pacers off with a 6-1, 6-0 win on Court 4 against Ethan Jones. The other four singles matches remained unfinished but Vassar led in all of them. Guzick was up 6-1, 3-0 on Doran at the top of the lineup, Cooper had fought back from an early deficit to lead 5-4 in the first set against Pfafman on Court 3, Kessler led Mulqueen 6-2, 4-1 on Court 5 and Udine was up 6-2, 4-0 on Court 6 versus Van Nort.

The Brewers, who had defeated The College of New Jersey in last year's second round, after a first round bye, for the program's first NCAA victory and sending them to the Final 16 Teams in the country, improved to 11-12 on the season and will take on ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins (19-2), champions of the Centennial Conference, at 10:00 am Saturday in the second round. The winner of that match will take on either regional host Middlebury, Drew or Farmingdale State in Sunday's third round. Colonial States Athletic Conference champion Marywood ends its season with a 13-5 record.
