MOBILE, AL (October 12, 2012) –
Samantha Schapiro and
Ava Sadeghi won their second round doubles match today at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College National Championship against a pair from DePauw University (Indiana) winning 4-6, 7-6, (10-7).
With the win, the pair made Vassar tennis history by being the first Vassar women's tennis athletes to post a win at the ITA Small College Nationals. “In a program with a storied history, it's exciting to add a new first and I'm so proud of the way they competed and elevated their level of play to clinch the win,” head coach
Kathy Campbell said.
The first set remained even throughout until late in the set. After losing the first set, the Vassar pair started hitting with more authority and moved the ball around the court better keeping the DePauw pair of Meg Crowley and Claire Marshall off balance. Vassar took a 4-1 lead only to see DePauw inch back into the match and even the set at 4-4. The duo then went up 5-4 and 6-5 eventually winning the set tiebreak by a 7-4 margin. In the third set match tiebreak Vassar won the first two points and then held a 4-2 and 7-5 leads and came up with some clean winners to close the match tiebreak 10-7.
“This win advanced them to the playoff for fifth/sixth place where they lost to an excellent UC-Santa Cruz team by a 6-3, 6-3 margin. It was an aggressively played match with both teams taking the ball early and volleying well,” Campbell said.
Sadeghi plays on Saturday for the seventh/eighth spot in the Division III singles draw against Crystal Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
