For five Vassar College athletes representing men's and women's cross country and men's and women's soccer, it's also a day of celebration after earning weekly Liberty League honors as announced by the Liberty League today..
Following repeat championships at the VC Cross Country Invitational, men's sophomore
Sam Wagner was named Co-Performer of the Week, junior
Johanna Spangler Performer of the Week and freshman
Aubree Piepmeier Co-Rookie of the Week. Men's soccer had a Co-Rookie of the Week in freshman
Evan Seltzer and women's soccer had a Co-Offensive Performer of the Week in senior
Carolyn Demougeot.
Sam Wagner, Sophomore, Men's Cross Country Co-Performer of the Week
With a gutsy performance and a course-tying 19:50 (5:20) performance, Wagner finished second in the season-opening VC XC Invitational. He was nudged at the finished line by a New Paltz runner, but Wagner's second place finish in a race with 99 participants led the Brewers to the championship for an eighth straight year. He finished seven places higher and two minutes faster than in the 2009 race. This is Wagner's first Co-Performer of the Week honor. Last season, he earned Rookie of the Week honors on September 28 and November 9.
Johanna Spangler, Junior, Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week
For a second straight year, Spangler won the season-opening VC XC 5k Invitational and in the process helped the Brewers win the championship for a fifth straight year. With a time of 19:25 (6:15 per mile), Spangler bested a field of 99 participants and 10 teams. She shaved a whopping 49 seconds off her winning performance the previous year. It is the fourth time in her career Spangler has been named Performer of the Week, the last coming on October 19, 2009.
Aubree Piepmeier, Freshman, Women's Cross Country Co-Rookie of the Week
In her collegiate running debut, Piepmeier had an impressive performance in the season-opening VC XC 5k Invitational. In a field of 99 participants, Piepmeier finished third overall with a 19:52 (6:24 per mile) effort. She was just three seconds off finishing second overall. She helped Vassar win the race for a fifth straight year.
Evan Seltzer, Freshman, Men's Soccer Co-Rookie of the Week
Seltzer had two goals in his college debut, a 2-0 win against FDU-Florham. Seltzer scored with a one-touch volley in the 14th minute and a one-on-one with the keeper in the 59th minute.
Carolyn Demeougeot, Senior, Women's Soccer Co-Offensive Performer of the Week
Senior captain
Carolyn Demougeot had two goals and an assist in a 3-1 opening win against SUNY New Paltz and two goals in a 3-1 win over Mount Saint Mary. Through two games, Demougeot has a team best four goals and nine points. This is her fourth weekly Liberty League award and the first since last October 29 when she also earned ECAC Upstate Co-Offensive Player of the Week accolades.
