MADISON, NJ (September 1, 2010) -- The Vassar College men's soccer team wasted no time establishing their defense in a season-opening 2-0 shutout of Farleigh Dickinson University of Florham Wednesday afternoon on the turf of Robert G. Shields field. In need of a scoring threat, Vassar freshman forward
Evan Seltzer debuted and netted the first two goals of his Vassar career.
The Brewers (1-0) face Manhattanville in their home-opener this Saturday, September 4 at 2:00 p.m. The Devils (0-1) host Arcadia on Saturday, September 4 at 11 am.
The Brewers scored 14 minutes into the game on a quick counter-attack as senior forward
Ben Scaglione advanced the ball up the right side and centered low to a streaking Seltzer for a nifty one-touch finish.
Vassar added insurance in the 59th minute with Seltzer's second goal, a one-on-one with the keeper set up by a touch lob pass from freshman
Adam McCabe.
“Seltzer is already in fine form and we'll count on his finishing abilities moving forward,” said head coach
Andy Jennings. Seltzer reaped the benefits of good team play in his impressive debut and may develop into a dependable scorer “but give credit to his his teammates who created those opportunities,” said Jennings.
While the offense managed to adjust to the fast turf and control the ball, the Brewers played “consistent and focused team defense” to limit their opponents.
From the defensive-midfield position,
Zander Mrlik, who briefly left the game with a cut under his eye, was a force all over the pitch, “winning key second balls and breaking up their attack in the middle,” said Jennings.
Vassar opened the season with a promising defensive performance and “technically sound ball movement that shows a commitment to team play.”
