POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (June 22, 2010) – The Vassar College men's tennis team finished its most successful season in school history with a final national ranking of No. 28 in Division III, as released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). It is the first time ever the Brewers concluded a season with a national ranking.
Under the direction of Liberty League Coach of the Year Ki Kroll, Vassar compiled a 14-4 record and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championships for a third straight year, falling to North Carolina Wesleyan, 5-2, in a second round match. The Brewers also captured the program's second-ever Liberty League Championship with a 9-0 victory over St. Lawrence.
“I am very proud of the 2009-10 team and what that group of players did to enable our program to have its first-ever national ranking,” said Kroll. “Those four year players laid the groundwork for our future teams to continue our goal of being a national contender each year.”
On the individual side, graduated senior
Michael Mattelson concluded his career ranked No. 22 in the nation. Mattelson became the first player in Vassar College men's tennis history to win a match in the NCAA Division III Singles Championships, a 7-6 (7), 6-4 victory over sophomore Amrik Donkena of Gustavus Adolphus.
