POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 20, 2010) -- Not only did the Vassar College women's squash team win its third Liberty League Championship this winter, the Brewers did so with class, as they were awarded the league's Winter 2009-10 Women's Squash Sportsmanship Award as selected by representatives from each member institution's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
The winning institutions in each sport were selected by league members based on sportsmanship exhibited by teams, coaches, fans, and event staff. Examples of good sportsmanship include respect for opponents and officials, positive support for all competitors, and proper conduct in the arena of competition as defined by the applicable playing rules.
The Brewers won their third consecutive league title this season after defeating St. Lawrence University and William Smith College, both by a score of 8-1. Vassar advanced to the title match of the Walker Cup at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championship, defeating Georgetown University 8-1 in the quarterfinals, edging Franklin & Marshall University 5-4 in the semifinals, and dropping a tight 5-4 match to George Washington University in the finals.
