Fischl Concludes NCAA Fencing Championships With Best-Ever Finish

CAMBRIDGE, MA (March 28, 2010) – Competing in his third straight NCAA Fencing Championship, junior Andrew Fischl finished in 16th place in the sabre competition, his best result in three years competing in the prestigious event. On Sunday, Fischl went 4-5 and was 10-13 overall in two days of fencing. 

In his first round on Sunday, and fifth overall, Fischl lost a close 4-5 bout to Max Murphy from Stanford. He lost his next round to fellow Long Islander Lucas Jansen, also representing Stanford. Fischl finished the round with a punishing 5-4 victory over Kevin Zeichmann from the University of North Carolina.

Round 6 started with a tough loss to Valentin Staller from Harvard, but followed with a resounding 5-1 win 5-1 over Michael Tom, also from Harvard. Fischl ended the round dropping a close bout to his good friend, Jeff Spear from Columbia.

The final round was Fischl's best of the day. He started with a big 5-4 victory over Avery Zuck from Notre Dame. Afterr losing a close 3-5 match to Notre Dame's Barron Nydam, roared back from behind in his last bout of the tournament to beat Marty Williams from Sacred Heart 5-4.
