Women's Fencing Falls to Columbia & New York University

NEW YORK, NY (February 4, 2010) – The Vassar women’s fencing team dropped two matches today against strong opponents from Columbia and New York University.

Vassar will take a 9-15, 3-3 record into Saturday’s final North East Conference competition against Wellesley, Sacred Heart, Dartmouth, University of New Hampshire, Boston University and the University of Massachusetts.

Round 1 – Columbia 22 - Vassar 5
Columbia claimed 8-1 victories in the sabre and epee. Foil managed a 3-6 record with wins coming from Katie LeClair, Jackie Kory and Alia Heintz.

Round 2 – NYU 15 – Vassar 12
The Brewers rebounded nicely against NYU. LeClair went 2-1 in the foil, but the promising portion of the mach came in the epee. Sophie Courser and Caitlin Clevenger both compiled 3-0 marks and Veronica Weser sported a 2-1 record. Vassar’s two other wins came from Kory and Julie Carlsen.

Men's Tennis
In helping lead Vassar to a No. 22 national ranking, Willner had two strong matches against Christopher Newport and Coe College, both 8-1 Vassar victories. Against Christoper Newport, Willner at No. 4 singles won his  match 6-1, 6-1 over Lorenzo Sison and duplicated that same 6-1, 6-1 win over Coe's Scott Stegemann. He also teamed with freshman Andrew Guzick to win his No. 2 doubles match against Coe 8-4.
Sean Murray
Men's Lacrosse
Murray was an important catalyst in Vassar's stunning 11-8 victory over Kean University. He tallied a career-high three goals on seven shots, enabling the Brewers to counter late game scoring by the visitors. Murray notched Vassar's fifth, sixth and eighth goals. He added three groundballs and a caused turnover to Vassar's victory, the first opening season win since 2003 and widely regarded as the biggest in program history.
