Losing Skid Snapped for Men's Squash With 9-0 Win Over Bard
Jake Harris
Freshman Jacob Harris swept his Bard opponent at the top of the ladder
POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK (February 3, 2010) – The Vassar College men’s squash team returned to form in a home match on Wednesday evening at Kenyon Hall, with a convincing 9-0 victory over Bard College.

Vassar moves to 4-9 on the season, breaking a nine-match losing streak, and hopes to build on its momentum at the Vassar Challenge, which takes place at Kenyon Hall on Saturday, February 13th with the men’s and women’s squash teams hosting Connecticut College, Columbia University, and Wesleyan University.

Junior Arjun Jain had one of the more tightly-contested matches for the Brewers at the No. 2 spot, returning from a 6-2 deficit in the first game to win 11-8, then holding onto a slim second set lead for a 12-10 victory before taking the final set by an 11-7 margin.

Senior captains Henk Isom and Arjun Agarwala both dropped their first games but furiously rallied to four-game victories. At the No. 3 spot, Agarwala returned from a 8-11 loss in the first game with seven consecutive points to take the second game, before finishing with a four game victory, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-9. Isom also bounced back nicely from difficulties in the first game, shutting out his opponent in the second on his way to an 5-11, 11-0, 11-5, 11-8 win.

Vassar’s players at the No. 5 through No. 9 spots all picked up sweeps, including the first non-default victory for senior Dave Prentice.

Freshman Jacob Harris also had a three-game sweep for the Brewers, building on strong play in previous matches against top opponents to take an 11-5, 11-9, 11-6 victory, the second of his young Vassar career.

“This is the strongest the Bard team has been as a program since I’ve been coaching here,” said head coach Jane Parker. “That said, we really needed a win today, and we stepped up to the challenge quite nicely.”
