NEW HAVEN, CT (February 28, 2010) – With four of its losses decided in four games or more, the Vassar College women's squash team was narrowly edged by George Washington University, 5-4 on Sunday, in the title match of the Walker Division of the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships hosted by Yale University.
The Brewers conclude the season at 9-7 with a No. 20 national ranking. George Washington grabbed the win with one match left to play, leading 5-3 heading into the final match.
Three of Vassar's four wins came in dominant fashion as senior No. 1
Emilie Kraft, senior No. 5
Hope Blinkoff, and sophomore No. 9
Nina Punukollu registered sweeps without allowing more than eight points in any one game. Vassar's fourth win came at No. 6 as sophomore
Meg Taylor registered her 10th straight victory to conclude her impressive one-loss season with a 14-1 record.
The Brewers dropped two five-game matches that could have gone either way, at No. 3 and No. 4. Senior No. 3
Caitlin Ly battled to a 2-1 lead with two close wins, but eventually fell, 14-16, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 13-11. Freshman No. 4
Libby Pei also dropped a tight five-game match after taking a 2-1 lead, 11-4, 6-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9. Vassar had two more close matches, as both freshman No. 7
Alexa Lichtenstein and senior No. 8
Olivia Mak won their first games, but eventually fell in four.
