Ten Brewers Earn Liberty League Honors

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 15, 2010) – Vassar athletes representing both the winter and spring seasons were honored by the Liberty League on Monday, as ten Brewers earned weekly awards. For women's basketball, senior Emily Haeuser was named Forward of the Week, while women's squash junior Kristine Bell and freshman Libby Pei earned Performer and Rookie of the Week honors. For men's swimming and diving, sophomore Jack Smart, sophomore Greg Sullivan, and freshman Nicholas Veazie were named Swimmer, Diver, and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The Guzick brothers, sophomore Ben and freshman Andrew, opened up the spring men's tennis season strong, with Performer and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, while senior Nicole Pontee and freshman Natalie Santiago garnered similar honors for women's tennis.

Emily Haeuser
Emily Haeuser, Senior, Women's Basketball Forward of the Week

Haeuser averaged 22.0 points and 10.0 rebounds for Vassar in a 1-1 league weekend. In a 65-46 win over Union on Friday, Haeuser notched a game-high 24 points to go with 13 rebounds, her ninth double-double of the season. Haeuser shot 9-for-11 from the field, 5-for-7 from the line, and even drained her only three-point attempt, just the third career three-pointer for the six-foot forward. On Saturday in a close 58-52 loss to league leading Skidmore, Haeuser had 20 points and seven rebounds, surpassing Lisa Ercolano '91 to become Vassar's fourth highest all-time scorer with 1,223 points. Over the last nine games, Haeuser is averaging 17.4 ppg. This is the fourth career Forward of the Week honor and the sixth of her career.

Kristine Bell HS
Kristine Bell, Junior, Women's Squash Performer of the Week

Bell went 2-0 at the No. 2 position at the Vassar Team Challenge on Saturday, as the Brewers split matches, sweeping Connecticut College before falling to Wesleyan University, 5-4. Against Connecticut College, Bell picked up a 3-0 (11-5, 12-10, 11-6) win against Laura Abrams, coming back from a 10-6 deficit in the second game. Bell picked up a solid sweep against Wesleyan's Grace Zimmerman in three games, 11-3, 11-4, 11-8. This is the first career weekly Liberty League award for Bell, a 2008-09 First Team member.

Elisabeth Pei
Libby Pei, Freshman, Women's Squash Rookie of the Week

Playing at the No. 4 position, Pei won both her matches convincingly at the Vassar Team Challenge on Saturday. In the Brewers' sweep of Connecticut College, Pei defeated Victoria Leeds, 11-4, 11-1, 11-5. Pei then gave Vassar a win in a 5-4 loss to Wesleyan, with a 11-2, 11-2, 11-5 win over Danielle Craig. Pei has now earned four Liberty League Honors, three Rookie of the Week and one Performer of the Week

Jack Smart
Jack Smart, Sophomore, Men's Swimming and Diving Swimmer of the Week

Smart led the Brewers to a convincing victory at Saturday's four-team Vassar Sprint Invitational with three individual and one relay win. Smart won the 400 IM in 4:27.02, nearly eight seconds faster than the second place finisher. He followed that with a win in the 100 IM in 55.77 and concluded his day by winning the 100 Breast (1:02.43). Smart also swam on the winning 200 Medley Relay team (1:42.92). This is the fourth Swimmer of the Week award for Smart.

Greg Sullivan
Greg Sullivan, Sophomore, Men's Swimming and Diving Diver of the Week

Sullivan split the diving events with Liberty League Diver of the Year, Skidmore's Doug Pilawa, as the Brewers convincingly won the four-team Vassar Sprint Invitational on Saturday. Sullivan won the 1-meter -- his first victory every over Pilawa -- in the process breaking the school record in the 1-meter with a score of 316.05, breaking his own 2009 record of 290.32. Pilawa won the 3-meter with a score of 337.35, followed by Sullivan's 322.43. Sullivan has earned three Diver of the Week honors this season, bringing his career total to nine.

Nicholas Veazie
Nicholas Veazie, Freshman, Men's Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Week
Veazie had two individual and one relay win as the Brewers convincingly won the four-team Vassar Sprint Invitational. Veazie picked up a close victory in the 100 Back, finishing in 57.27, just .05 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Veazie added another tight win in the 50 Back, finishing in 27.37 with just a .08 second cushion. Veazie also swam on the winning 200 Medley Relay team (1:42.92). Veazie has been honored as Rookie of the Week four times this season.

Ben Guzick
Ben Guzick, Sophomore, Men's Tennis Performer of the Week

Playing in his first match for Vassar after transferring from Carleton, Guzick won at No. 1 singles and doubles, as Vassar opened the spring season with a 9-0 sweep of Manhattanville. Guzick earned a dominating 6-2, 6-0 win over Julian Oribe at singles after teaming with Mike Mattelson for an 8-4 win over Julian Oribe and Michael Capozzi at No. 1 doubles.

Andrew Guzick
Andrew Guzick, Freshman, Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week

Guzick followed his older brother in the lineup, winning his matches at No. 2 singles and doubles as Vassar began the spring season with a 9-0 sweep of Manhattanville. Guzick teamed with Max Willner for a convincing 8-1 win over Dean Tahir and Lance Dorfi at No. 2 doubles, and then defeated Michael Capozzi, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Guzick has now earned four Rookie of the Week honors.

Nicole Pontee HS
Nicole Pontee, Senior, Women's Tennis Performer of the Week

Pontee kicked off her final spring season with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles as Vassar defeated Division I Fordham, 8-1 on Saturday. In doubles, Pontee and partner Joy Backer convincingly defeated Martina Featherston and Sarah Tremaine, 8-3. Pontee earned a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles against Tremaine, going to a first set tie-breaker for the 7-6 (11-9) win before capping the victory with a strong 6-1 win in the second set. This is Pontee's fifth Performer of the Week honor, bringing her career total to 20, to go with seven Rookie of the Week awards.

Natalie Santiago
Natalie Santiago, Freshman, Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week

After playing at No. 6 singles during the fall, Santiago picked up a win in her first appearance at No. 4 in Vassar's 8-1 win over Division I Fordham on Saturday. Santiago defeated Taylor Holt, 6-1, 6-3. Santiago also earned a No. 3 doubles win, with first-time partner Alyssa Roush, 8-2 over Jenny Mullen and Brittany Russell. This is the first career Liberty League honor for Santiago.
