Women's Squash and Swim-Dive Take Home League Honors

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 25, 2010) – Following a successful weekend in the pool and on the court for Vassar's women's swim-dive and squash teams, the Liberty League recognized five Brewers with weekly awards. In recognition of their strong performances at the Seven Sisters Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Mount Holyoke College, sophomore Caroline Shannon, sophomore Christie Musket, and freshman Shannon Sara all earned league accolades. In their first matches of 2010 for the women's squash team at the Amherst Invitational, sophomore Meg Taylor and freshman Alexa Lichtenstein both went 2-0, in the processing garnering league awards.

Caroline Shannon
Caroline Shannon, Sophomore, Women's Swimming and Diving Swimmer of the Week

Shannon was the top swimmer at the Seven Sisters Swimming and Diving Championship, taking home three individual and one relay win as the Brewers placed fourth out of five teams. On Saturday, Shannon won the 200 IM (2:16.42) and the 100 Breast (1:10.70) and swam on the winning 200 Medley Relay team (1:57.06). She earned her final win decisively, with a nearly five second margin of victory in the 200 Breast (2:32.41). A five-time Rookie of the Week last season, this is Shannon's first career Swimmer of the Week award.

Christie Musket
Christie Musket, Sophomore, Women's Swimming and Diving Diver of the Week

Musket swept the diving events at the Seven Sisters Swimming and Diving Championship as Vassar placed fourth out of five teams. In the 1-meter on Saturday, Musket took first place with a score of 340.95. She completed the sweep with a win in the 3-meter on Sunday, recording a score of 314.75. This is the second Diver of the Week award for Musket, a first-year diver. She is Vassar's first ever female diver to receive Liberty League accolades.

Shannon Sara
Shannon Sara, Freshman, Women's Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Week

Sara took home two individual and one relay win for Vassar as the Brewers placed fourth out of five teams at the Seven Sisters Swimming and Diving Championship. Sara won the first individual event of the meet, in the 500 Free with a time of 5:19.42. She then picked up a victory in the 400 IM (4:45.28) and swam on the winning 200 Medley Relay team (1:57.06). This is the fourth Rookie of the Week honor for Sara.

Meg Taylor
Meg Taylor, Sophomore, Women's Squash Performer of the Week
Taylor was 2-0 at the No. 6 spot on Saturday as the No. 16 Brewers went 1-1 against Franklin & Marshall and Colby at the Amherst Invitational. In Vassar's 5-4 win over Franklin & Marshall, Taylor earned a 3-0 (11-6, 11-2, 11-7) win. Against Colby, Taylor wore down her opponent in a 12-10, 11-7, 11-1 victory, in the process improving to 7-1 on the season. This is the first career Performer of the Week award for Taylor, who was a three-time Rookie of the Week last season.

Alexa Lichtenstein
Alexa Lichtenstein, Freshman, Women's Squash Rookie of the Week

Playing at No. 8, Lichtenstein won both her matches as No. 16 Vassar split 5-4 matches with Franklin & Marshall and Colby on Saturday at the Amherst Invitational. Lichtenstein registered a 3-0 (11-4, 11-2, 12-10) win in Vassar's 5-4 victory over Franklin & Marshall. She then registered an impressive five-game win over her Colby opponent. After her 2-0 lead turned into a 2-2 tie, Lichtenstein convincingly won the final game, 11-2 in a 11-4, 11-9, 11-13, 6-11, 11-2 match. This is the first career Liberty League award for Lichtenstein, who is having a strong debut season with a 7-1 record.
