POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 7, 2009) – In her first semester in the lineup for the Vassar College women's squash team, freshman
Libby Pei proved herself an immediate contributor at the top of the lineup, a fact cemented on Monday as she was named the Liberty League Performer of the Week. For Pei, a two-time Rookie of the Week, it is already the third weekly Liberty League honor in her short career.
After playing her first four matches of the season at No. 4, Pei moved into the No. 3 spot on Saturday against tough competition as No. 18 Vassar hosted No. 17 Amherst College. Pei was up to the task, notching one of the most thrilling wins of the day in Vassar's 5-4 loss, going to five games with Kate Savage. In the back-and-forth match, Pei won, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 8-11 and then pulled off a 16-14 win in the decisive fifth game. The following day, Pei dropped her first match of the season 11-2, 11-8, 11-4 to Whitney Roller of No. 12 Bates College, but Pei then closed out the semester with a convincing win over Vanderbilt's Brooke Hammer, 11-4, 11-1, 11-4. Pei concludes the semester with a team-best 5-1 record.
The Brewers closed out the semester on Sunday with a 4-2 record and will not compete again until January 23, when they travel to Amherst to play Colby College and Tufts University.
