Men's Fencing Earns Two Medals at Opening Season Meet

NORTHAMPTON, MA (November 7, 2009) – At the The Big One Fencing Tournament, the annual kickoff tournament for the season held at Smith College, the Vassar men's fencing team earned two medals and according to head coach Bruce Gillman showed some encouraging signs for the upcoming dual match season.

In Sabre, junior Andrew Fischl had a mixed meet. After defeating Brown freshman Teddy Weller 15-14 to make the Gold medal bout, he lost by the same score to Boston College fencer Peter Souders to take second place. Senior John Rothman, junior Dennis D'Urso, and freshman Matt Harvey and fenced well in their respective pools but didn't go far in DEs.

Epeeists Nick Johnson, Brian Rouse, Raffi Radna, and Daniel Flynn also had impressive performances in pools, but only made the second DE on this day. Rouse and Johnson were both top 16 finishers.

Foil was led by freshman Tavish Pegram with a 6th place finish and senior Jesse Bisignano who finished 9th. Freshman Alex Vastola had a great pool round and some impressive DE bouts, but was finally eliminated in his third DE bout. Junior Mike D'Urso had a fairly good pool round, but didn't get far in the DE round this year.

The Brewers will be the dual match season next Sunday, November 15 at home in Walker Field House against Haverford, Hunter, Yeshiva, and Drew.
